2 Important Upcoming Changes in Magento Marketplace

This proverb from Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher has summed up today’s competitive business environment. If there are no changes in the technology it will become obsolete. Magento is one such technology that keeps on upgrading itself. Two important changes have been announced by Magento Marketplace that are going to be effective from July 11th, 2019. These two changes are related to Magento 2.1: End of support implications and Extension Quality Program automated Code Sniff testing.

The forthcoming sections of this write-up will highlight these two upcoming changes that are going to take place in Magento Marketplace. Magento 2.1 compatibility option for new submissions in dev portal will be removed, per our end of support life policy

In order to make customers utilize the supported versions of Magento, the Magento Marketplace has adopted a new policy when it comes to themes, extensions, and shared packages that are compatible with Magento versions and have reached the end of their support life.

In case, a Magento version reaches the end of support life, these two things will occur.

  • Extensions and themes compatible with that particular Magento version will get eliminated from the Magento Marketplace.
  • If there are any new extensions, themes, and shared packages they will have no alternative to claim compatibility with that Magento version during the submission process.

Due to this implementation, following changes have been affected from 22nd April, 2019.

All extensions and themes compatible with exclusively one of the following Magento versions will be removed:

  • Community Edition 1.1.x
  • Community Edition 1.2.x
  • Community Edition 1.3.x
  • Community Edition 1.4.x
  • Community Edition 2.0.x
  • Enterprise Edition 1.6.x
  • Enterprise Edition 1.7.x
  • Enterprise Edition 1.8.x
  • Enterprise Edition 2.0.x

After 22nd April, 2019, new extension, themes, and shared package submissions will not have the alternative to opt compatibility with the above mentioned Magento versions.

The versions mentioned below will reach end of support life:

  • Community Edition & Enterprise Edition 2.1.x – June 2019
  • Open Source 2.2.x – September 2019
  • Commerce 2.2.x – December 2019

The CodeSniffer tool used in automated testing for the Extension Quality Program will be updated to v3The Magento Extension Quality Program will introduce version 3 of the Code Sniff test into automated testing as on 11th July, 2019. There have been quite a handful of changes and updates in the Code Sniff Test. There have been updates in Warnings & Fixes and Errors.New classifications for Errors and Warnings:

Type Severity Description
Error 10 Critical code issue.
Warning 9 Possible security and issues that may cause bugs.
Warning 8 Magento specific code issue.
Warning 7 General code issue.
Warning 6 Code style issue (PSR2).
Warning 5 PHPDoc formatting or commenting issue.
